CRECHES
 

First of all, apply as soon as you know that you're pregnant , especially in Toulouse and its suburbs. There are not enough crèches so the waiting lists are very long.

You can of course go and visit them before applying.

 
 

CRECHES COLLECTIVES / MUNICIPALES  :
 
It is a state crèche created by the town hall and managed by P.M.I ( Protection Maternelle et Infantile).
 
Skilled staff composed of several nurses.
 
The price depends on the parents' income tax declaration. It is around 10 or 12% of the parents' revenues.
 
 

CRECHES ASSOCIATIVES / PARENTALES  :
 
The management of this kind of crèches depends on the parents. Indeed it is an association of parents, who have asked the authorisation to create a crèche.
 
The staff is also composed of skilled nurses but also of parents. Generally it is 2 nurses and 1 parent for 15 babies.
 
You have to know that if you opt for this kind of crèche, you or your partner will probably have to go on a regular basis (half a day or 1 day per 3-4 weeks) to help the nurses.
 

CRECHES FAMILIALES :
 

Your child will be looked after at a nurse's.

This woman depends on a PMI centre, therefore babies are regularly visited by the paediatrician and the nurses of the PMI.
 
It is not exactly the same as a nanny (French term : Assistante Maternelle or Nourrice Agréée). Indeed for an assistante maternelle, the price is much higher but you receive a grant from the CAF every term. This subsidy is called AFEAMA.
 

ADVANTAGES FOR THE PARENTS:
 
It is the less expensive way to make your child looked after. Indeed the price depends on your revenues.
 
If you are French -tax resident, you can deduct a part of the payment you make to the crèche from your income tax. The amount may change each year according to yearly finance law (Loi des Finances), but to give you an idea in 2000 the maximum deductible amount was 3750,00FRF (571 € ).
 

DISADVANTAGES FOR THE PARENTS :
 
The opening hours can be a problem if you get special working hours or in case of night shift.
 
The general opening hours are from 7 or 7.30 A.M to 6.30 or 7 P.M.
 
The crèche refuses to keep your baby when she has temperature. In case she gets fever during the day the nurse will call you to come and fetch your baby.
